Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship Hairdressing

This course will allow you to gain vital hands-on experience working in a salon. You will develop the skills and knowledge required to work in this fast paced industry.It combines study with practical learning on-the-job. You will attend college on a day-release basis while employed and working as an apprentice/junior hairdresser. You will learn how to treat, cut, colour and style hair, to achieve customer satisfaction.

Study Aims

The aim of this apprenticeship is to provide you with the knowledge and hands-on experience required to work in the hairdressing industry. You will earn while you learn and will gain vital hands-on experience working in a salon.

Modules Studied

  • Consultation
  • Shampoo and condition treating the hair and scalp
  • Cutting hair to create various techniques
  • Style and finish hair
  • Colour and Lighten hair using techniques
  • Perming hair (optional).

Times of Delivery

  • Monday - 9am - 4.30 pm

Teaching and Assessment

Summative assessment will be ongoing throughout the completion of the stated units. Once you have completed all of the summative assessments, and your functional skills requirements, you will undertake an end point assessment. Your end point assessment will test your practical skills under the supervision of an independent external assessor.You will attend college once a week and will be monitored throughout the year by an allocated personal tutor for both hair practical and theory. Timely reviews will be completed at your work placement by an assessor to monitor progress and assess skills.

End Point Assessment

The final assessment for the qualification is an End Point Assessment (EPA) which must be passed to achieve the full qualification.

You will have the opportunity to attend workshops and seminars, to further your knowledge and prepare you for the hairdressing industry. You will be encouraged to enter internal and external hair and beauty competitions, and attend seminars and workshops to enhance your skills and employability.


You will attend college one day a week to study hair theory and practical. You will be employed as a work based apprentice at an external salon where you will be reviewed regularly to assess your progress and skills.

Entry Criteria

All students must be employed and have the support from the employer to enrol onto an Apprenticeship programme. You must be prepared to attend College for 1 day per week and work in the salon up to 40 hours over the remaining days of the week.

You are required to bring in GCSE grades in during your induction, ideally you should have C grades in maths and English to full fill the standard requirements. If you only have a C grade in one subject you will need to study further maths and or English and achieve a Level 1 Functional skill if your apprenticeship is Level 2 and attempt Level 2 functional skill exam.

You will be have an interview with the Apprenticeship team . As part of your interview you will carry out a number of tasks which will help us assess your suitability for the course.
