About the FCA

There are few jobs where you can make a real difference to the 2 million people who work in the UK Financial Services industry, the 40 million consumers of financial products and the stability of our economy as a whole. 

 

From regulating Consumer Credit to driving action on Foreign Exchange manipulation or helping strengthen accountability in the banking sector, the FCA is working with the industry to protect consumers, ensure the integrity of the UK financial system and promote fair and effective competition. Our remit has expanded significantly since our creation in 2013, with the number of firms we regulate growing from 23,000 to over 45,000. We oversee conduct across the full span of the financial sector from global investment banks to high street payday lenders. We do this by working with consumer groups, trade associations and professional bodies, domestic regulators, international partners, and a wide range of other stakeholders.

 

About the role

A Criminal Disclosure Unit Paralegal Apprentice will work alongside integrated teams of investigators and legal professionals to identify criminal misconduct. You will form part of the disclosure team and will be responsible for reviewing material in line with criminal legislation.

Key Responsibilities:

         Reviewing and assessing material gathered during investigations using a digital evidence management system and applying document descriptions in accordance with the requirements of the relevant criminal legislation and FCA policy.

         Assisting in the creation of disclosure schedules of unused material in preparation for trial.

         Assisting the disclosure team in ensuring that case files and records are accurately and efficiently maintained, including document scheduling, archiving and retrieval in line with FCA policy and procedures.

         Drafting documents, including correspondence, memos and minutes.

         Preparation of disclosure bundles involving timely and accurate complex document preparation including photocopying, collation, pagination, labelling and listing.

         Maintaining and promoting effective working relationships with colleagues in other business areas and with external bodies.

We recruit paralegals in to our Enforcement division, more specifically into our Criminal Disclosure Unit.

         Participating in investigative and legal training.

         Developing paralegal skills to a high standard, to enhance and develop your legal analysis and judgement skills.

         Ability to analyse complex information and apply a description accurately reflecting the contents in a comprehensive and concise manner.

         Ability to work confidently with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.

         Ability to take timely decisions based on relevant analysis of information.

         Ability to work well under pressure and to deadlines, whilst maintaining accuracy.

         Good interpersonal skills to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

         Good oral and written communications skills.

         Continuously seeks out new and effective ways to work, and shares this with the organisation.

         Self-motivated and able to work collaboratively as part of a team, valuing different perspectives and backgrounds, and working with other departments, divisions and teams.

         Open to learning, challenge and change, and be flexible to undertake new tasks and responsibilities.

         Ability to exercise own judgement where necessary and appropriate.

Minimum qualifications required (e.g. GCSEs/A-Levels):

·         Minimum of 2 A Levels or equivalent grade C or above.

·         In addition to 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 (C) - 9 (A) including Maths and English.
