Outside of our modern offices in Warrington, our apprenticeship programmes offer the chance to really get involved in the everyday workings of a scrap metal yard with opportunities so exciting that sparks really do fly!

“I worked in a clothes shop before starting my apprenticeship so I knew what it was like to have a job.

“Before, my experience of work was shorter days that dragged and were really boring, but with this job, you are so busy and always learning that you don’t even notice the hours.

“It showed me that there is more going on in the world and opened my eyes to what I could achieve.

“I’m really happy that, through the college (The Engineering College, Liverpool), I also managed to get a maths GCSE which I didn’t have before.

“Each day is different, working on different trucks or trailers or bins. I’d done a bit of welding at my old college but this is so different and it took me a few weeks to get my head around it.

“You learn different weld techniques and my mentor, Alan helped me to understand what I had done right and if it was wrong, explained why it was wrong and what I needed to do to fix it.

“I would definitely recommend doing this apprenticeship to anyone who doesn’t mind getting dirty and definitely with a company like EMR, who are big enough to make sure you have enough work to do. There are people in my class that work for smaller companies where they have quiet days and are sometimes sent home!”

Tom started his apprenticeship in February 2016 and since then has made great progress through the programme. We have no doubt he will continue to achieve great things on his learner journey.
