Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

As my first year at sixth form college was drawing to a close, university was heavily encouraged as the next step and there was next to nothing discussed about apprenticeships or any other routes. I began my application to university with the rest of the students in my classes, however, I didn't think it was the right track for me - as if I was was forcing a square peg in a round hole!

I spoke with my friend's mum about the accounting career that I wanted to pursue and, as an accountant herself who had completed her studies with CIMA, she advised me to look into the same qualification. I began looking at apprenticeships that offered CIMA study and applied for my current position.

What do your friends think of your apprenticeship choice?

I'm friends with a mix of people who went to university and some who are completing apprenticeships. All agree that the apprenticeship route was the best choice for me and my career path. At the start, some friends associated apprenticeships with a negative stigma and believed it was very hard to work yourself up in a career when you begin as an apprentice. They thought being in a company as an apprentice was a negative.

Contrary to this, as I have progressed through my apprenticeship, my friends are impressed with how far I have come in such a short space of time and all agree that their view on apprenticeships has now changed - they have seen the experience and qualifications I have gained in just two years.

Why would you recommend CIMA?

Within the finance industry CIMA has a great reputation and is looked at as one of the best qualifications to receive and therefore makes you feel proud to be a student with CIMA.

How does your employer support you?

I have received lots of support: advice on exams, revision tips, experience and lots of opportunities to take part in events with other members of the apprentice community. Although I had the option to study CIMA outside of the apprenticeship pathway, I believed it was best for me as an as I am provided with more support from my learning provider as well as receiving 20% study time to complete my studies.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Closer to my goal of being a management accountant, if not already one. I would also love a role that allows me to provide support to apprentices in the workplace and ensure they are getting everything from the apprenticeship that they expected to...and more.
