I first applied to the maths student summer placement (SSP) as I have an interest in puzzles and cryptography. During the summer, I worked directly on real problems and developed skills in coding, presentations, and how to practically apply abstract mathematical concepts. The structure of the SSP meant that we worked in small teams, and each member could contribute their own skills to push the project further.

Working at GCHQ is a unique experience: there are opportunities to join a variety of teams, each contributing to a different aspect of the mission.

Mathematics at GCHQ bridges the gap between academia and industry; problems require innovative solutions and have real-world impact.

I’ve now returned to university to study for a PhD, but I would love to return to GCHQ in the near future – the work is challenging but great fun and extremely enjoyable. I would not hesitate in recommending a summer placement there, the SSP left me wanting more!
