Apprentice Bricklayer - Yorkshire West

Case Study: Apprentice Bricklayer position with Barratt Homes in WestYorkshire

I was interested in the construction industry from a very early age, and in 2008 I did my work experience with a small building company. I left secondary school in 2009 where I achieved 9 GCSE's, Grades 'A' to 'C'. I joined a small building company and enrolled on a bricklaying apprenticeship. I enjoyed working at this company but realised it was without prospects and felt I needed a more challenging job with better career opportunities. It was with this in mind that I applied for an apprenticeship with Barratt/David Wilson. I was fortunate enough to be accepted and as a result, have now attained NVQ level 2 in brickwork and am currently working my way to level 3.

The apprenticeship programme offers many opportunities and with hard work and determination, it is possible to progress up the career ladder with the full support and backing of the company.

I was very nervous when I first started but my Site Manager and colleagues were very friendly and welcoming. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work here; it has given me more confidence as a builder and also as a person. My ideas are listened to and valued, which makes me feel like an equal member of the team.

I have learned so much from my colleagues and Site Manager in the past two years. Each day at work is different and brings new challenges. The apprenticeship programme has helped me to learn both the practical and theory side of my chosen trade. I am trusted to be more "hands-on" than other apprentices I know with other companies.

I would recommend working for Barratt/ David Wilson to anyone who feels they have the determination to apply themselves to reach high standards.

During the remainder of my time as an apprentice bricklayerI am looking forward to perfecting my skills and working my way up to Trainee Assistant Site Manager. This is my immediate ambition, but I have every intention of taking full advantage of the invaluable opportunities I have got at Barratt Homes-David Wilson and shall endeavour to fulfil my career ambitions to be best of my abilities.
