The morning began with a hands on creative arts workshop which demonstrated how the use of creativity and active play can help with child development, a topic which is closely linked with their upcoming exams. This was followed by a yoga class led by one of the College’s tutor which the students actively participated in and illustrated how stretching and movement can help people of all ages, particularly the elderly. The final workshop of the day was a dance class led by former professional dancer Mark Scott who now teaches at the College. Students learnt a dance routine and were taught the importance of physical activity for all age groups.
Many of the students, who are all interested in a career in the Health, Social Care and Early Years sector, rated the day as ‘excellent’ and thought the workshops had helped them understand the different roles and how they could utilise what they had learnt in the future. Student Shakeka Hylton said: “I didn’t know what to expect from today but I’ve learnt a lot and really enjoyed myself, especially the creative arts. I know I definitely want to go in to Health and Social Care after today.”
The assistant Head Teacher at Northumberland Park School, Diane Liversidge, said: “We give our students the opportunity to visit a 6th forms or Colleges based on the vocational area that they are interested in. This is the third year we’ve come to the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London because it is a centre of excellence for deliverance of Health, Social Care and Early Years. The staff always put in a lot of effort and enthusiasm.”
Course Team Leader Wendy Whitelaw at the College said: “I feel it’s really important that we do all we can for students and schools in the local area and support them in any way we can. We’re the number one performing College in London, we’ve got fantastic facilities and it’s always great for them to see that they can get the best education right on their doorstep.”
