The results of the survey showed that 48% of the College’s 2013-14 learners are now working 16 hours or more each week. This figure increases to 61% when those who are self-employed or working less than 16 hours a week are also included.
Laura studied Health and Social Care BTEC Level 1 at the College’s Enfield Centre and she is now self-employed. Her work involves visiting elderly service users to enable them to continue living independently within their homes by providing them with the additional support they need. As a single mother Laura finds she is able to adapt her work very well to looking after a young child as she can choose her appointments to fit in with her schedule.
Laura plans to return to studying when her daughter is older. She said of her time at the College: “I learned how to work with a wide variety of situations and how to deal with them. In one lesson we experienced being blind by wearing a blindfold then learning to trust in our partners. I also really enjoyed the hands on work placements we were able to take part in.”
Kurt Hintz, Vice Prinicipal for Curriculum and Learner Experience at the College presented Laura with her prize. Kurt said: “It was a pleasure to find from the Learner Destinations Survey that so many of our students, just like Laura - are now in work related to their courses, and often gained as a result of having successfully completed their courses.”
