While you probably spent your weekend watching Andy Murray win Wimbledon, a plucky group of UK youngsters were also getting gold over in Leipzig for Team UK. The WorldSkills competition is held every two years and pitches young apprentices who have truly mastered their art against each other. So rather than returning volleys and serves, these competitors might be battling it out in floristry or joinery.
Our medal haul at this year's WorldSkills was one of the best with two golds, one silver and three bronze medals joining the competitors on their way back home. Alongside this we also garnered 17 Medallions of Excellence.
Prime Minister, David Cameron remarked: "British ambition and ingenuity has once again taken on and beaten the best in the worldand I extend my congratulations to Team UK."
Ashley Terron, Gold Medalist in Bricklaying, said:"To win Gold in Bricklaying is just amazing. It still hasn’t really sunk in that I am the best young bricklayer in the World. The last few months have been really tough fitting my training for WorldSkills around work and family responsibilities but it has been totally worth it. I want to show the UK how Apprenticeships and vocational training can enable young people to gain a real qualification and a real future." If you're interested in following in Ashley's footsteps then you'll need to enter a selection event which are held later this year.
