Summary

Our Nuclear Engineering/Scientist Degree Apprenticeships offer the perfect balance of on-the-job training and experience whilst enabling you to also study for a degree. You will develop skills in the areas of science and engineering whilst undertaking practical elements of training on our exciting new build, commissioning/decommissioning programmes

Annual wage

£23,056 a year

Increasing to £25,637 in year 2 and £28,130 in year 3. You’ll have the opportunity to benefit from an annual bonus, linked to company performance, of up to £4000.

Nuclear scientist and nuclear engineer (integrated degree) (level 6)

Hours

You will be required to work typical office-based hours at Sellafield Ltd, which is Monday - Friday, 8.10am to 4.20pm. However, you may be requested to start earlier and work hours such as 7:00am to 15:10pm or 7:30am to 15:40pm.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.


What you’ll do at work

  • You will follow a custom-made training scheme, you will develop core skills in the areas of science and engineering whilst undertaking wider practical elements of training on our exciting new build, commissioning/decommissioning programmes

You will follow one of our specialist pathways which include:

  • Engineering Design, Operational Research & Analytics, Safety Case, and System Engineering

  • Throughout your chosen scheme, you will get to work on exciting projects and deliver complex pieces of work whilst becoming an integral part of a community of enthusiastic, talented individuals, who will go on to shape the future of Sellafield Ltd

  • As an integral part of your apprenticeship your progress will be monitored and assessed against government standard requirements. You will compile an evidence folder, demonstrating your areas of learning with accredited certificates of completion for elements of your training

  • Within the last six months of your apprenticeship, you will undertake an assessment by an independently appointed organisation, where you will be expected to clearly demonstrate your capability to perform in your chosen career

Training

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Your training plan

  • Year 1 - All apprentices will commence full time academic and engineering studies at one of our local training providers

  • Years 2-5 - All apprentices will be office based but will continue academic studies at one of our local training providers

  • Work placements will be based at Hinton House, Warrington

The Degree Apprentice Programme consists of 2 phases:

  • Level 5 ST0380 Nuclear Technician Apprenticeship

  • Level 5 Foundation Degree/ Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering or Science aligned to your chosen pathway

For candidates with the potential to progress further:

  • Level 6 ST0289 Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Apprenticeship

  • Level 6 Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (BEng) or Science (BSc) aligned to your chosen pathway, over a further 2-year period.


Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • Any subject x2 (grade 4)

  • English Language (grade 4)

  • Mathematics (grade 4)

  • Science / Engineering subject (grade 4)

A Level or equivalent in:

  • STEM Subjects Preferred (grade 96 UCAS Points)
