London Underground plays an essential role in our city’s development. Our network covers 253 miles, serving 275 stations and carriers more than five million passengers per day. 

The role of a London Underground engineering apprentice is critical to ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of our tube network. The technological advancements we are seeing in our trains and operating infrastructure mean that we need to adapt the way we maintain our assets to keep them operating at peak performance. You’ll be at the forefront of these developments whilst also keeping a watchful eye on our legacy assets across the network.

What will I be doing?

Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn from experienced and qualified staff through various placements across the organisation to gain a broad spectrum of knowledge through a hands-on approach to learning.

Power – Electrical

As a London Underground Electrical Apprentice, you will participate and work with competent teams that ensure the DLO Electrical Assets are maintained and delivered into service in a safe and timely manner. During your apprenticeship, you will be placed across a range of departments within the Electrical area, enabling you to experience and learn how the Electrical Division functions. You will learn how to read Electrical and Mechanical Drawings, be trained to write reports, fault findings, Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems. learn how to carryout preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, and structures.

Nature of Work:

    • Gather information
    • Reporting
    • Assemble tools, equipment and materials
    • Check tools, equipment and materials for fitness for purpose.
    • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within his/her control.
    • Report deviations which cannot be solved
    • Follow the correct process/operations for the allocated task
    • Establish and maintain communication with the relevant persons
    • Correctly establish scope and accuracy of testing
    • Carry out required testing using correctly accessed equipment and methods.
  • Take action to rectify the defective asset.
  • understanding: Handover asset in accordance with company procedures
  • Complete documentation in accordance with company procedures

What training and support will I get?

You’ll have an Apprenticeship Development Manager who will act as your line manager and be responsible for ensuring that the design and delivery of the Apprenticeship is fit for purpose. They will help secure the right placements for you and support you in your professional development. You’ll also have a mentor that’ll support and guide you sharing their knowledge and expertise.

You’ll also have opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training. 

We also have an established Graduate and Apprentice Committee as well as an Alumni group, these groups are powerful networks in developing your understanding of the organisation, different apprenticeship schemes and opportunities to develop your career. Many current graduates and apprentices believe this to be a powerful support network and they often hold apprentice only events that are very beneficial to your continued learning.

What qualifications will I gain? 

Qualification/training offered:

  • 6 months at Acton to complete PEO unit, this includes Mechanical, electrical, electronic and Hand skills workshop. 
  • City & Guilds 2365 Level 3 Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)
  • City & Guilds 2392 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification
  • 2391-52 Level 3 Award in Inspection and Testing
