Infrastructure Apprentice

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is the largest fire and rescue service in the UK and the fourth largest in the world. Our Firefighters are at the heart of our communities and work in what can be unpredictable, but most certainly an exciting and rewarding role. 

Our frontline is supported by a hardworking team of non-uniformed staff, from accountants and ICT specialists to cooks and technicians, without whom we could not function.

Overview:

We are looking for an Infrastructure Apprentice and the aim of this role is to contribute to the support and maintenance of Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s users and mission critical DaTS services and systems. Working closely with the DaTS Infrastructure Team this post will support colleagues to ensure the availability and integrity of all DaTS Infrastructure Services.

This role can be based in any of the following locations: Inverness, Dundee, Johnstone, Cambuslang and Newbridge. There will be an assessment centre day held on the 30th of October at Headquarters Westburn Dr, Cambuslang, Glasgow G72 7NA.

Responsibilities:

  • Learn to support end users with all DaTS related queries and issues in a helpful, professional and methodical manner
  • Learn how to manage and work within service levels agreements when providing user support
  • Learn how to analyse, troubleshoot and resolve DaTS related issues across a wide array of services and systems
  • Work effectively and efficiently while maintaining a safe and practical workplace for yourself and others
  • The support, maintenance and provision of end user devices (desktop PC’s, laptops, tablets, and associated peripherals), critical operational support systems within fire appliances, servers and cloud based enterprise services and systems, datacentre services through SFRS and any other relevant and appropriate activity considered essential to the role
  • Produce documentation for procedures and systems, including provision of knowledgebase articles where appropriate
  • Attend all training and development activities as required, and complete all necessary studies and qualifications to achieve a Diploma in Digital Applications Support SCQF Level 6 progressing onto Diploma Digital Technology IT Support SCQF Level 8

You will need the following skills:

Essential:

  • National 4 Maths and English or equivalent
  • Confident, enthusiastic, self-motivated and a drive to success in a digital and technology discipline
  • Ability to apply good judgement when working within a fast paced and demanding environment
  • Proactive attitude to problem solving and shows enthusiasm for learning new skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • A good team player and can also add value working independently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Undertakes work with honesty and integrity
  • Well organised and methodical, operating with pace, enthusiasm and creativity
  • Full UK driving license
  • Willingness to travel across Scotland to meet the business needs of Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, as well as personal learning objectives

Desirable:

  • National 5 Maths and English or equivalent
  • A clear desire for a career in a digital and technology discipline
  • Knowledge of technology operating systems
  • Knowledge of digital and technology hardware
  • Foundation knowledge of DaTS servers operating systems and associated infrastructure

Salary: £22,129 per annum

Working hours: Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm
