HVDC Electrical Power Network Engineer Higher Apprentice - Warwick

About the role

 

 

This role is based within our Strategic Infrastructure Team. Our new Strategic Infrastructure (SI) business unit has been set up to deliver a programme of  new major projects in the UK, as well as other strategic projects to help us deliver on our net zero ambitions and help the UK Government meet its target of 50GW of renewable energy by 2030.  

 

We’re looking for Higher Apprentices to join the SI Engineering & Project Delivery team  that will deliver the portfolio of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)  systems essential to enable the connection of increasing volumes of  renewable power generation.

 

Our project portfolio includes our Eastern Green Link projects; four HVDC links, each transferring 2GW of green energy between various locations in Scotland and England and Sea Link, an HVDC link to reinforce the transmission network between Suffolk and Kent. 

 

This role is a fantastic entry way into a career as an Electrical Power Network Engineer. During your programme:

 

  • You’ll gain further qualifications on your programme such as a IAM Certificate in Asset Management and SHEA. 

 

  • Most of your training programme will be off job learning. This is a mix of studies at Loughborough College, study time within your work placement for exams

 

  • and coursework as well as integral National Grid training at our Centre of Excellence in Eakring.  

 

  • You’ll regularly be staying away from home (either in Eakring or Loughborough through prebooked accommodation) to attend your training sessions. 

 

  • During your on job time, you’ll complete a series of work based project tasks linked to your National Grid job role that will form part of your of your ‘end point assessment’ for the qualification.  

 

An Electrical Power Network Engineer will apply their knowledge of the electricity network to safely perform their activities. This requires them to:

 

  • Comply with company and industry health, safety, and environmental standards, regulations, operating procedures, and working practices.

 

  • Ensure that all safety considerations are incorporated and evident in all working practices.

 

  • Apply asset management methodology.

 

  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders.

 

  • Read, understand, and interpret technical information relative to their role.

 

  • Produce clear and precise reports in relation to their activities.

 

  • Develop and agree project plans to undertake their activities.

 

  • Use company IT systems to provide accurate and reliable data to support business decisions.

 

  • Demonstrate that their work activities support the business to achieve its regulatory incentive mechanisms.

 

  • Provide information to support business planning processes in relation to their role activities.

 

  • Use company risk tools and techniques to evaluate and predict the reliability of engineering systems and equipment.

 

 

Location

 

This role has multiple vacancies available based at our Warwick office. These vacancies offer flexible, hybrid working. You will be required to travel to our site locations in this role. 

About you

 

 

  • 5 GCSEs including Maths and English Language grade C/4 or higher.

 

  • 2 A levels at grade A-C ( One must be in Maths or Physics) or equivalent (Level 3 in an Engineering discipline grade Merit or higher eg National Certificate in Engineering if Maths module is merit or above).

 

  • Must have or be working towards a full UK driving license.

 

You don’t need prior work experience; the determination and will to succeed is far more important as we will teach you everything you need to know. The role will provide you with a variety of skills including transferrable skills to support your career development within National Grid.
