This route is for anyone who wants to train as a detective constable but does not want to study for a qualification.
On this programme, new recruits will complete a few weeks of initial training at our Birmingham base before starting your career on one of our busy frontline teams. You will train for two years, completing practical learning 'on the job'.
As you move further into your training, you will start to specialise in investigations, working on one of our busy teams in CID or Public Protection. At the end of your training you'll pass the national examination that qualifies you as a DC and you'll be ready to decide where your career will take you.
An overview of the training
The training focuses on practical learning and is specifically designed to prepare you for policing. You'll start out at our Birmingham training base for the first few weeks, before beginning your time moving around different policing teams.
You’ll be employed as a police officer from day one and will spend your time on the frontline with experienced officers.
You will compete the necessary training to ensure you are ready to work as a police officer before moving into Investigations where you will then hone your skills as a detective.
Throughout your training, you’ll undertake a number of operational deployments including:
Response - this involves responding to emergency calls from the public and going out to the scene of the incident.
Neighbourhood policing - this involves working with a neighbourhood policing team (NPT). They are usually a small team of police officers and police community support officers who are dedicated to policing a certain community or area.
Investigations - using all the tools available to you, both office-based and out in the community.
You’ll be supported every step of the way with coaching and tutoring, and you’ll be working alongside experienced officers throughout.
And at the end of two years, you’ll complete your probation and be eligible to apply for specialist roles and consider your career options, that may lead you to promotion through the ranks!
