Our helicopters are used extensively in civil and military roles worldwide. Primary operations are in the UK, Italy, Poland and the USA.
Programme Description:
Our Aerospace Mechanical Technical Support apprenticeship is suited for those who are interested in the theoretical side of engineering - planning, scheduling, design, development & test elements of mechanical engineering. This scheme is predominately an office based role.
Mechanical Engineering, in a helicopter context, covers areas such as airframe, propulsion, fuel, hydraulics, flying controls, rotors and transmissions.
During the scheme, you will experience a number of placements across the Engineering department, with the ultimate aim of moving you into a final placement area based on business requirements and the skills displayed during the apprenticeship.
What you will do
The apprenticeship will start with an Induction into Leonardo, as well as a Yeovil College Induction to ensure that apprenticeship requirements and expectations are fully established.
The structure of the Apprenticeship programme will be as follows:
• Year 1: Full time at Yeovil College to complete a Level 2 competence qualification in Advanced ManufacturingEngineering (practical/workshop based) and start a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (knowledge/classroom based) (this qualification includes mathematics to AS/A2 level).
• Year 2: Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and starting the Level 3 competence (workrelated) qualification in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent qualification). Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
• Year 3: Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and continuing the Level 3 competencequalification in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent qualification). Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to start the Level 4 Certificate of Higher Education in Engineering.
• Year 4: Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and completing the Level 3 competencequalification in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent qualification). Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to complete the Level 4 Certificate of Higher Education in EngineeringEach Apprentice on this route will need to complete an End Point Assessment as defined in the Apprenticeship Standard, this will take place in the final months of the program.
Throughout the apprenticeship apprentices may be placed in some or all of the following departmental areas:
Structural Design: Apprentices will be involved in: aircraft 3D & 2D production design work, carry out changes to production drawings, and investigation work leading to design proposals and solutions. They will also be tasked with investigating specific customer requirements and change requests to aircraft designs
Rotor & Transmission Design: Apprentices will produce 2D mechanical detailed drawings of assemblies..
Materials Laboratory: Apprentices will undertake inspection, investigation and testing of manufactured products from a materials perspective.
Transmissions: Apprentices will be involved in the design and analysis of transmissions components, and investigations involving continuous improvement
