2025 - Actuarial Apprentice Pathway

In Summary

Number crunching is for calculators. The actuarial pathway is for creative problem solvers with big ideas who want to make their mark. Does that sound like you?

Job Description

From analysing the risks of a catastrophic event, to how long people are likely to live, actuaries know how to make numbers count. So, if you believe maths can help make the world a better place, you’ll fit right in at Aviva.

We’ll teach you to collect and interpret data and statistics. You’ll learn how to use mathematical models to predict the impact of events that might occur in the future so we can plan and invest for any financial losses in the future. The important work you’ll do will help us protect our customers and our business.

From the moment you join us, you’ll be in a permanent position where you can own and drive your development to become brilliant and confident in your role here.

Ready to shine bright in your career?

Get to know the role:

  • Actuarial Apprentice (York and Bristol): your number skills will be put to immediate use, analysing data, developing models and helping to prepare reports that inform business-critical decisions. Your work will directly impact our insurance, pensions, and investment strategies. This hands-on experience will enhance your technical skills and give you a deep understanding of the financial industry. All while you soak up the experiences of our qualified and trainee actuaries.

You’ll spend 80% of your time learning the ins-and-outs of the business and 20% studying towards your Level 4 Actuarial Technician qualification, which typically takes two years to complete, to become a successful Actuarial Advisor.

Beyond your qualification, the opportunities to advance go on and on. You can transition onto the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) exams, progressing towards a fully qualified Actuary. We’ll empower you to take control of your journey, take on innovative projects and shape your future and the industry’s.

What you’ll get

  • A permanent job from day one
  • A starting salary of £25,100
  • Support towards relevant professional qualifications and lots of other development opportunities
  • A great support network to help you grow into your role
  • 25 days holiday, plus bank holidays
  • Flexible working and wellbeing support
  • Opportunities to get involved and give back to our local communities with paid volunteering time

Where could you be based?

We have Actuarial apprentice opportunities in our Bristol and York offices. You can find out more about each location by clicking the links below. Wherever you’re based, the likelihood is you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. Typically, it’s three days in the office and two days from home but this can vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team, and the business. Even with our Smart Working approach, it’s important to note that you’ll still need to live within commuting distance of the relevant office. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and have access to the right internal support networks to help you to succeed.
