Having worked as a member of the hospital’s bank team for some time, Rowena was keen to secure a permanent job within the hospital and had always wanted to be a porter. While working with HIT towards an Intermediate Facilities Service apprenticeship combined with Functional Skills in English and Maths, Rowena was offered a full time job and is now proud to be the first porter at the hospital to hold a Facilities Services qualification!
“I learnt a great deal through the apprenticeship, not only in relation to the actual job but I feel that working towards the qualification at the time of interview gave me the edge over other candidates. The customer relations element is also very important is we have to protect the dignity of our patients at all times,” explains Rowena.
“The apprenticeship gave me the chance to learn a wide variety of skills – and knowing I’m the first learner to achieve this qualification with HIT is a real boost to me!”
