What’s your advice for those considering an apprenticeship?

My advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship is to research the opportunities they can offer. The structure of an apprenticeship allows you to gain workplace experience alongside the academic learning, which in my opinion is the best of both worlds. When I discovered apprenticeships as an option they seemed daunting, but choosing this route is the best decision I have made!

Why did you decide to apply for the apprenticeship programme at WSPIs it everything you expected it to be?

After I had chosen that a career in Project Management was what I wanted to pursue, I spent some time researching various companies that offered a degree apprenticeship scheme in this particular area, this is how I came across WSP. I had never heard of them before, so I looked into what they were all about and decided that this was a company I wanted to be a part of. Their corporate values and goals stood out to me and their concern for prioritising employee welfare is impressive. Now that I have been an employee here for just over 2 months, I can confidently say that WSP have lived up to my expectations.

How would you describe the culture at WSP?

I would describe the culture at WSP as welcoming. Especially when in the office, I feel no hesitation to reach out or talk to new people. Everyone I have met so far have been approachable and willing to help or to point me in the right direction.

What sort of support do you receive during your apprenticeship? And how has this helped you grow and develop?

Right from the beginning my line manager has been my main point of contact. For my first week they were by my side to ensure I was settling in well and happy. Going forward there is a conscious effort to have a weekly catch-up to discuss my week (work and university related), any issues or questions I may have and career development opportunities. I have also had lots of support from other assistant Project Managers, sharing their knowledge and assistance whenever I need them. Knowing I have someone there whenever I need has been reassuring in these first few months.
