Nicole Wilson 2nd Year Aspire Trainee Currently Working In Bridging Finance
1 year ago

Where did you go to college, what did you study?

I’m currently in my second year of the ASPIRE Programme after joining the programme back in September 2021 after working for a year following my A Levels which were Business, Sociology and Health & Social Care where I was awarded an A*, A and C.

Why did you choose the Aspire Programme?

I chose the Aspire programme because I knew I didn’t want to go to University - I hadn’t decided what career path I wanted to go down and I was enjoying earning money and wanted to gain some real-life work experience by taking on the challenge of moving away from home and earning. I specifically chose the Aspire programme at Close Brothers over an alternative apprenticeship programme as I liked the rotational plan and the opportunities Close Brothers had due to it being a modern merchant bank and having a multitude of different lending divisions.

Typical day (what does it look like)?

A typical day for me involves communicating and liaising with my team as teamwork and culture are a huge part of Close Brothers. I do this to then decipher what it is I can help with that day but most days I will crack on with my own assigned workload as the ability to work independently is also a key skill developed by the programme. Due to the nature of Bridging Finance, often I am also on the roads with Director, Joanne Parr, to visit clients and the site’s and see how works are progressing - this is a brilliant opportunity to network and develop stronger relationships with our client base. I’d also note that it is really important that you get to grips with managing study along with working a full-time role within the business – you are fully supported in doing so.

Why should someone choose the Aspire Programme?

It is a brilliant opportunity to develop your network and try out different businesses and role opportunities to decide a career tailored to your personal skill set and ambitions. I have spent time networking with people internally and externally which has built up my confidence and ultimately get my foot into the door of the world of work which at such an early age can really put you ahead of the game. Close Brothers has a brilliant family culture which tailors perfectly with internal progression and also makes choosing your career path a lot easier as it is encouraged to speak to the different divisions and Aspire students are very highly regarded across the Bank.
