Before starting my bricklaying apprenticeship with Barratt/David Wilson Homes, I studied my A Levels at Scarborough 6th Form College. I am now progressing towards my NVQ Level 2 in Trowel Occupation. I intend on furthering my education to NVQ Level 3.
Before I joined, I was aware that Barratt were one of the biggest companies in the country. However I didn’t realise they were a 5 star builder. I knew it was a great opportunity when I found out they were taking on apprentices. Knowing that Barratt was a massive housebuilding company, I knew it was going to be likely I’d get a lot of training on site. Once I visited the website and read the information available on the benefits, and how you can progress with the company, I made sure I applied straight away.
One of the main advantages of working at Barratt is that you always have someone looking out for you, making sure that you’re completing your work on site and at college. Everyone is willing to help from the Site Labourer to the Managing Director. Most of them started as apprentices themselves and so understand the importance of apprenticeships. Also it’s great to be able to work outdoors being hands-on.
There is also a lot of building going on, so this means you get more practice at laying bricks and block work. On this new job I’ve even had a chance to work with thin joint masonry, which not many apprentices will have the opportunity to do so.
Barratt has a great scheme, that makes sure you are getting on with your college work, and that you are getting lots of practice on site. Every few months there’s an apprentice review form to fill out, so you can let the company know how things are going, and if there are areas you need more help in than others. There are also lots of incentives to work for Barratt. Not only is the pay very competitive, there are lots of rewards for hard work and punctual attendance. I’m now looking forward to finding out what options I have, and how I can progress further in the company, and in my Apprenticeship.
