We spoke to
Kara, a Field Technician Apprentice here at Virgin Media O2. She told us a
little bit about what it’s like being a female Field Tech, what interested her
about the role and her day-to-day responsibilities. Here’s what she had to
say...
What did you do before Virgin Media O2? How did you get here?
I worked in EE
as a customer Assistant. I saw an advertisement about the apprenticeship which
had loads of promising information. I wanted something more challenging so I
took a chance and applied.
What does a
typical day in your life look like within the Field Tech Apprenticeship role?
My role is to install and service residential
customers. My day-to-day task is to ensure I leave the customers property with
them having a working service. Within my role, it is important to give friendly
and informative help so that they are left satisfied. I also have a role of
ensuring my safety as well as others safety while I work.
What is life at
Virgin Media O2 like? What attracted you to the apprenticeship scheme?
Working at
Virgin Media O2 feels like being a part of a big family. Working with people
who except you for you no matter what gender or ethnicity. The apprenticeship
has loads of opportunities to train and also offers a lot of guidance. I went
from having no knowledge, to being a fully trained technician. Virgin Media O2
stands out from any other company because of the togetherness and the ongoing
support on and off the field.
Can you share some
specific highlights of the work/projects you have completed or worked on so
far?
Being able to train within other parts of the
business. I completed my business training and my fibre training, which allows
me to do fibre and business jobs.
What do you like about your job? Where would you like to progress in the
future?
I
like working with various customers and being able to engage in conversations
with them. It allows me to feel less nervous and doesn’t make me feel like I’m
solely there to work. I would like to progress into being a mentor for new
starters to give them the help I once got when I started.
What was the application process like?
The
application process was thorough. It was also open in a way where we could have
normal conversations and not feel robotic. We were also able to ask and
challenge the interviewers with questions.
Do you have any tips for someone trying to get into your scheme?
I
would advise you to be open to learning new things and processes. Especially if
you haven’t worked in this field before, like me. Don’t be afraid to ask for
help when you need it because there are always people willing to help.
