Degree Apprentice In Transportation

Hello. My name is Anmol Gill – a Degree Apprentice in Transportation at AtkinsRéalis. I work alongside experienced professionals, applying my academic knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. Through this and my Civil Engineering Degree, I'm learning to design, plan, and oversee the construction of transportation infrastructure projects like bridges and roads.

What has been the best part of your apprenticeship?

I've enjoyed being able to get experience in the engineering business through the diverse projects I've worked on while with the company, which have included the use of contemporary software, visiting structures on-site to gather beneficial information for their assessment and evaluation, and understanding how the business wins work and plans for future projects. I've also been able to participate in university life and work towards a Degree, which has always been an ambition of mine.

What do you like about being an Apprentice #InsideAtkinsRéalis?

My colleagues have been great at helping me understand the field's intricacies. Fellow apprentices at various stages in their courses have given me insight and guidance from their experiences. The work environment at AtkinsRéalis is extremely welcoming and supportive, which allows apprentices like me to thrive.

What's your Top Tip for those considering an apprenticeship?

Be prepared to be challenged, but also know that you will be well supported.

How is AtkinsRéalis supporting you to follow your career interests?

AtkinsRéalis makes it easy to learn about the opportunities available here. We have regular webinars and are constantly encouraged to seek out projects that spark our interest. For example, I've been particularly interested in participating in a project related to the defence sector. After a discussion with my managers, I was helped to pursue this opportunity and others. I also receive updates on the various projects to keep me abreast of my roles.

How are you engineering a better future for our planet and its people?

I assess bridges on a project, using data to enhance safety and sustainability, guiding decisions on repairs and transportation safety for a better future. For example, I might assess the capacity of a structure to withstand live and dead loads. This provides insight into the necessity of repair works or even what speed would be safe for trains/road vehicles to travel over the bridges to ensure the public's safety.
