Job title – Apprentice Joiner
Department – Production
What does your department do?
I work for the Production team at Story Homes. We are responsible for building the homes we sell
What do you do on a day-to-day basis as an Apprentice?
Every day is different but typically I will follow the advice and instructions provided by the fellow trade’s people on site, this may include me working on things to support the first and second fix stages of a build.
What do you like about being an apprentice?
It’s great to be part of a team and who all take the time to contribute to my learning and understanding. I also enjoy being hands on with my work.
Why did you choose a career as a Joiner?
I chose this career as I have been interested in the construction industry from a young age, it all stems from when my father built his own house. I also have many family members working in the industry which helps to better understand what its like.
I also like the idea of not being stuck in an office all day, I like to be hands on and get stuck in, which this job allows me to do daily.
Is there any particular advice you would give to someone looking for a career in your area of work?
Be prepared to work hard and also be prepared to listen and learn. You need to take pride in your work and have a passion for what you do as the days can be hard, especially when the weather is against you. My main advice would be to get as much work experience as possible.
