SSTG is a non-profit making organisation providing recruitment services and training on behalf of over 30 member Companies - UK ship owners and world wide operators. We recruit aspiring candidates to train for rewarding careers as Deck or Engineer Officers for the Merchant Navy. SSTG provides full support to cadets whilst undertaking HNC, HND, Foundation Degree or Honours degree programmes. The college phases of the cadets study will be offered through universities or college of further or higher education.Where will I study?

Currently Hons courses are run at Universities which are Greenwich; Liverpool John Moores and Plymouth. HNC, HND and Foundation Degree course are run at Fleetwood near Blackpool, Glasgow, South Tyneside near Newcastle and Warsash near Southampton. In conjunction with the employing companies and colleges we provide full organisation, instructions and guidance during both the college and sea based phases. We monitor and supervise the progress of our cadets to ensure that they are receiving the full support they need to succeed in the completion of their training programme. This includes a strong emphasis on ensuring that the cadets are given the appropriate support to assist you in acclimatising to life, work and training at sea.

When are the intakes?

Intake dates are in January, May and September every year. We offer approx 200 cadetships every year.

The package

The minimum package for HNC / HND & Foundation Degree is:

  • All course/tuition Fees.
  • All accommodation fees.
  • Monday to Friday Breakfast and evening meal. Weekends get Brunch when at college.
  • All travelling expenses to and from college are paid for start and end of each phase.
  • All travelling expenses to and from ship are paid for.
  • Cost towards uniform.
  • Generous Training Allowance

What about after the training?

Once the cadet has finished his or her studies they will have a professional qualification, known as a 'Officer of the Watch' certificate of competency. Issued by the Maritime and Coastguard agency will allow them to work on any type of ship anywhere in the world it's an unlimited ticket.

Salaries

Expect earnings for a qualified 3rd engineer officer or 3rd Deck navigation officer is circa £25k. Career progression is done on sea time, going up through the ranks a cadet can feasibly can make Master/Captain or Chief Engineer in 10 - 15 years.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must hold at least 4 GCSE's (Grades A-C)/SCE Standard Grades (Levels 1-3), or equivalent qualifications, in Mathematics, Physics (or Combined Science), English (or subject using English), and at least one other subject.
- Candidates holding GCE 'A'/SCE 'H' qualifications Candidates entering with 'A' Levels/Highers, or equivalent qualifications, must hold the core subjects referred to above at either the GCSE/SCE Standard or 'A'/'H' levels, or equivalent qualifications. If the 'A'/'H' qualifications, or equivalents, include Mathematics and/or Physics.
-Undergraduate Degree Programmes Entry to a maritime related degree course, approved by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency/Merchant Navy Training Board as meeting the academic requirements for a certificate of competency, (e.g. a B.Sc. in Nautical Science or Maritime Studies for deck officer trainees or B.Sc. in Marine or Mechanical Engineering for engineer officer trainees) is in accordance with the admission requirements of the universities and colleges concerned. Typically the minimum standard will include Mathematics and/or Physics at GCE 'A' or SCE 'H' level.
-Age Entry Requirements All applications are considered on their merits irrespective of the age of the candidate. However all candidates must be at least sixteen years of age by the date they commence training. Most new entrant cadets who apply are between the ages of sixteen and twenty five, although applications from older candidates are sometimes received. Cadet groups at college will include candidates from across the entire age range and SSTG has a single training allowance irrespective of age at commencement of training.
