Meet Malissa, Software Tester Apprentice

I currently work in Content Protection and Integration. The department consists of 40+ professional test consultants trained to departmental standards and using ISEB best practice methods in all project test phases.

Each Integration Engineer ensures that the quality of the components under test meets business objectives. We cover test and integration disciplines across highly complex environments; which includes DTH, Compression, CA, Interactive Broadband, STB Cards, AdSmart, STB, ViewCards, OnDemand, Production, OTT and TX. We also provide whatever testing is required on projects.

I love that I get the opportunity to learn and work on new exciting projects, I get to be creative, share my ideas, and test some of Sky's innovative products, like Sky Q.

I also get first-hand experience to ensure/test these products ensuring they perform at high standard as expected.

For me, I started my career in Retail at Sky. Through the apprenticeship, I am currently pursuing a career in Tech, which has opened so many doors for me.

Describe a project, or career highlight where you were able to make a difference.

One of my career highlights at Sky, is my nomination for a Sky Hall of Fame award. This nomination was for my contributions to various community services; such as working with food banks for feeding the homeless, delivering food supplies to the elderly during the peak of COVID-19, and setting up an ongoing food bank in local community. This was an amazing experience to be recognised for my work.

At Sky we’re always challenging ourselves to deliver the next big thing. What’s that like, and why is it exciting?

It's always exciting to get work behind the scenes on some of the amazing products that Sky offers to customers. One of the projects I recently worked on is testing the software on the Sky boxes, before they are released to customers.

This was truly exciting to see what happens and ensure it works before it was released.

How is Sky an inclusive place to work where you can be yourself?

I love that the fact Sky creates opportunities for everyone. One personal highlight for me is the Fresh Perspective programme for under-represented groups within Sky. I love that this opens new doors and opportunities for everyone - especially for me, being a part of that ethnic minority group. I get to have a mentor who helps to guide me on my career path and achieve my personal career goals.

I would 100% encourage anyone who wishes to use an apprenticeship to further their career. It allows you to explore and learn so much more than you would learn in a standard classroom setting. You are surrounded by a wealth of knowledge and experts in the field that gives you hands on experience.
