What did you study at College?

At Sixth Form College I studied Product Design, Business Economics and English Media – not a typical Engineer’s A levels!

What is it about Engineering that interests you?

Engineering is a very broad term, but for me it has to be the problem solving and finding ways around a particular constraint. As well as the satisfaction of producing a quality design, getting recognition for it, and then watching it take shape on site.

Why did you choose to join Hoare Lea?

Hoare Lea is very well regarded within the Building Services industry and offers a high level of progression for its employees.

What training do you receive?

I have recently completed my HNC in Building Services Engineering and will shortly be commencing my final year of College to obtain my HND. In addition to this, I have also received Computer Aided Design (CAD) training in order to improve my technical drafting skills.

Describe a typical day:

A typical day can be somewhat varied and can include anything from visiting a construction site to inspect work, design work and production of drawings, writing reports, attending meetings and responding to emails.

What projects have you worked on so far?

The most notable projects I have been apart of would have to be the Earls Court Exhibition Centre and Battersea Power Station development, both of which are primarily within the residential sector.

What have you learnt so far?

As I work in a specialist Energy and Utility Infrastructure Group, my work tends to differ from the typical Mechanical and Electrical design work within the firm. I have learnt a multitude of things during my time at Hoare Lea, notably:

- How to conduct gasand water load assessments for varying types of developments.

- How to coordinate multiple utility services through heavily congested streets, specifically London.

- Gained well rounded knowledge in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE).

- Business and sector awareness, experience in how the industry operates.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Completing university with over 3 years industry experience.

What’s the best thing about working for Hoare Lea?

Socialising within the design teams and on-the-job training.
