The youngsters all recently took part in a passing-out ceremony at Folkestone Fire Station to mark completion of the 'Fired Up' course, which was tailor-made by training and employment support specialist Work Ready People in a joint collaboration with Kent County Council, which funded the project, Folkestone JobcentrePlus and the county’s Fire Service. The aim was to give the 18-year olds valuable employment skills, essential work experience and assistance with finding full time jobs, as all nine had previously either been unable to find work or had not been eligible for an apprenticeship. The six-week course combined classroom-based work-skills activities and practical experience with the Fire Service of First Aid, Health & Safety training and team building.So far, four have already secured jobs, a work placement and further training.
"Another has a potential job in construction, so we're currently helping him obtain his CSC card which will enable him to progress in that sector, and although the others are still looking for employment, they all have new CVs, practical experience and a good work ethic to support them," said Sharon Cowan, Work Ready People's regional manager for the South.
"We're delighted that all of them successfully completed the course which has equipped them with the basic employment skills and given them a valuable head start in their chosen careers," added Sharon, "and of course if there are any employers out there who may be able to offer employment opportunities, please get in touch!"
