Recent hackings in the news include a spot of inter-Korean shenanigans, plus a goodly helping of Anonymous doing what Anonymous does best. Oh, and quite a few Chinese hacks into various privatised defence systems here in the UK, as well.
But that's only what we've heard about.
How much more goes on that nobody - but nobody - is ever going to hear about? For whatever reason?
Those reasons could include anything from confidence in the banking system ... to matters of national security ... to just plain admitting a total lack of adequate security measures in the first place.
And in light of the National Audit Office's findings that there's an IT security skills shortage that could go on for decades, it looks like we could be in for a bit of a rough ride when it comes to matters of system security.
But then again, E-Skills, the UK's sector skills council for business and IT is on the verge of launching cybersecurity apprenticeships, in partnership with such companies as Atos, BT, IBM, Cassadian, CREST and Qinetiq.
Three apprenticeship pathways will be on offer: security specialist, security architect and penetration tester.
The apprenticeships themselves will be paying between £13k and £16k, and will be lasting for two years.
Minimum requirements for an apprenticeship offer would be five GCSEs and two A-Levels.
So if you've missed out on last October's call for technical apprentices by GCHQ at Cheltenham, but you're still wanting to get paid to train to keep the nation's systems safe from the Chinese, Anonymous and anyone else looking to hack into them, you've got a second chance now.
The programme isn't listed on the E-skills website yet, but keep checking.
