Mitchell Brice, who studied Media Production Levels 2 and 3 at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London has won the London Region VQ Day Learner of the year Award. On June 3rd Mitchell attended an awards ceremony where he and other regional winners gathered where Owen Henley from the North West Region was announced as overall winner.
Mitchell won over competitors following his success in media production since completing his course. Mitchell’s qualifications in Creative Media production have helped him to build an impressive videography portfolio including; filming the official promotional video of Lovebox Music Festival, projects for Groove Armada and Chase and Status, and developing his own successful youtube channel and film-making company. The awards ceremony took place at One Birdcage Walk in the heart of Westminster and was attended by the winners of the other regions, the Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise, Matthew Hancock MP who presented the award alongside the Chairman of the Edge Foundation, Lord Baker and CEO Jan Hodges OBE. However, the celebration did not begin there; prior to the event, all of the regional winners were taken on a trip on the London Eye and booked into a 4* star hotel in Central London.
The Learner of the Year awards is an annual ceremony created to highlight and celebrate the individuals who are benefitting from studying for vocational qualifications with the aim to give vocational qualifications ‘...the same accolades and level of recognition that academic qualifications receive’. The VQ Day campaign is led by independent education charity Edge who are committed to raising the status of technical, practical and vocational learning across the UK.
Jane O’Neill, Interim Principal and Chief Executive commented: “This prestigious award is the fourth VQ Day Award that the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London has secured, and Mitchell’s success not only in these awards, but in his career is testament to the quality of the teaching that takes place here. We are incredibly proud to have played a part in Mitchell’s success and we wish him luck in his future endeavours.”
Mitchell said upon winning the award: "I'm thrilled to have been selected as this year's VQ Learner of the Year for London. Completing a vocational qualification has given me the skills and drive to pursue my career and I'm delighted that this nomination has recognised my hard work. There are so many different training opportunities to choose from and I would highly recommend vocational learning to others."
On attending the ceremony, Mitchell said: “It was great to meet all of the other driven young people. The awards have motivated me to continue striving for success, and I hope what I have achieved will inspire others from the College and around London to work hard and get recognised for it, like I have.”
Previous College VQ Day winners were National Award winner Delroy Ogiste (2010) who studied Performing Arts, and former London Regional winners were George Ogunrinola (2009) who studied Creative and Media and Plumbing Apprentice, Natasha McDonald (2010).
