Groups of employers have worked together to design these new apprenticeship standards. The point of having employers, known as trailblazers, work together on these is to make sure that what you learn fits with what industry (the employer) wants you to know.There are 11 new apprenticeship standards at level 2, which are ready for delivery. These new Level 2 apprenticeship standards are:Butcher
Butchers work in the meat and poultry industry and in various retail outlets. As an apprentice butcher you would learn knife skills, health and safety in the food chain and food safety. Read the full standard.
Gas network team leader
Responsible for building, maintaining and repairing the UK gas network infrastructure, the gas network team leader apprenticeship last for 12 – 18 months and has two specialist areas – main layer and service layer. Assessments and ultimately successful completion of the apprenticeship consists of a work log, observation and knowledge assessments which are graded.
Dual fuel smart meter installer
Dual Fuel Smart Meter Installers install, exchange, commission, decommission and maintain smart metering systems and associated equipment. As part of this dual fuel smart meter installer apprenticeship you would achieve registration on the Gas Safe® Register and Meter Operators Code of Practice Agreement and you would be eligible to apply for membership with the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Financial services customer adviser
Possibly working as a branch cashier, dealing face to face, by phone, by email or by post with customer enquiries, problems and complaints, as a financial services customer adviser apprentice you would help customers use new digital services, administer customer accounts, proactively contact customers and identify sales opportunities.
This apprenticeship standard has no required qualification; however employers strongly recommend that the apprentices should take one of the following qualifications as part of their apprenticeship: Certificate in Personal Finance, Award in Retail Banking Conduct of Business, Certificate in Financial Education, Award in Financial Education, Award in Business Banking; Award In Insurance, Legal and Regulatory; Award For The Foundation Insurance Test, or the Award in Financial Administration.
Investment operations administration
Undertaking such work activities as: reconciliation of investment records, data entry, investigating missing or inaccurate data, compliance and money laundering checks, researching information towards investigative activities and projects and processing correspondence.
The investment operations administration apprenticeship, like the financial services customer adviser apprenticeship has no mandatory qualifications attached to it although employers recommend that a professional qualification is taken, such as the Award in Fundamentals of Financial Services (Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment).
Golf greenkeeper
A Golf Greenkeeper maintains, cares for and looks after the overall appearance of a golf course. It is their job to maintain a good quality playing surface. The golf greenkeeper apprenticeship will typically take 24 months to complete, but it can be done more quickly if you already have the skills from working on a golf course.
The Golf greenkeeper apprenticeship standard is recognised by the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association, which is the Professional Body for Greenkeepers and at the start of the apprenticeship you would be registered with BIGGA.
Assessment includes a combined multiple-choice and structured answer paper, the completion of a range of core practical activities and a personal statement from you, the apprentice.
Housing / property management assistant
The housing / property management assistant apprenticeship is an entry level role. The role involves working under supervision doing things like: preparing paperwork for service charges, supporting consultations and undertaking customer surveys, undertaking neighbourhood and property surveys using checklists, data administration, conducting supervised viewings and rental negotiations, handling telephone calls, filing and scanning, and arranging meetings and events.
On completion of the apprenticeship, apprentices will be able to join the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) at Member level, the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) at Associate Grade or Member Grade (depending on length of service within the sector and within the organisation), or the Institute of Residential Property Management (IRPM) at Foundation Level or Associate Level (depending on length of service within the sector and within the organisation).
Land-based service engineer
Land-based service engineer apprentices will work with a range of machinery and equipment relevant to the industry that they are employed in. The role includes preparing new and used machinery including pre-delivery inspection, carrying out scheduled services and routine maintenance operations and, preparing equipment for repair.
As part of this apprenticeship you would work towards a Level 2 Diploma in Land-based Engineering, Emergency First Aid and, Abrasive Wheels certificates.
Able seafarer (deck)
As an able seafarer (deck) apprentice you would be a member of the navigation department on board ships and vessels. You would carry out watch keeping duties; maintain the safety and security of the vessel, cargo and personnel on board; and undertake a range of practical seafarer skills covering rope work, anchoring and mooring activities and operations.
As part of this apprenticeship you would work towards the following qualifications and certificates
Nuclear health physics monitor
A Nuclear Health Physics Monitor apprentice uses specialist instruments to provide radiological monitoring services onsite within the nuclear industry to protect people, plant and the environment from the adverse effects of ionising radiation and contamination. They take readings of surface and airborne contamination levels and radiation dose rates, record the readings detected and respond accordingly.
Approximately 20 months into the 2 year apprenticeship a formal, end-point assessment will take place. Before this though you would work towards a compulsory certificate in IOSH Working Safely and will complete a portfolio of evidence. No other qualifications are a compulsory part of this apprenticeship although it is recommended that your employer might have you undertake a Level 2 Nuclear Industry Awareness certificate and perhaps a Level 2 Knowledge qualification in Radiation Safety Practice.
Property maintenance operative
The kind of role that you might have as a property maintenance operative includes: maintenance assistant, property engineer, facilities assistant, maintenance engineer, maintenance manager, maintenance technician, caretaker, janitor, multi-skilled technician or premises manager. You could work within the housing, healthcare, social care, hospitality, education, commercial properties, and leisure or retail sector.
This apprenticeship takes a minimum of 12 months to achieve and throughout this you will keep an updated log book / portfolio of evidence, complete a short research assignment and then, when your employer and assessor agree that you are ready, you will complete a final assessment which includes a combined short-answer and multiple choice questionnaire, a demonstration of some core practical activities which will be observed and an interview.
