With Apprenticeship Week upon us, and politicians promising record investment in Apprenticeships over the next few years, at notgoingtouni.co.uk we are pleased to see so much attention being paid to one of our favourite ways for young people to start their career.

We thought you might like 10 Interesting Facts About Apprenticeships.

  1. Business, Administration and Law are the most popular sector subject area for people starting an apprenticeship with 110% increase in people in these areas since 2007. Over 76,000 people started apprenticeships in these sectors last year!
  2. The North West region has had the most apprenticeship starts for the last 5 years with a record breaking figure of 47,280 in 2009/10 alone.
  3. In total the Retail and Commercial Enterprise sector has seen most people start apprenticeships with 417,600 participants in total since 2002/3.
  4. In 2002/03 Hospitality and Catering and Business Administration where the two most popular options. In 2010 Customer Service and Business Administration now rank the highest with Hospitality and Catering closely behind in third.
  5. Do you think you may be too old for an apprenticeship? Think again! 49,000 people (almost 18%) who started an apprenticeship in 2010 were aged between 25 and 60 years old.
  6. In 2010 170,000 people completed an apprenticeship, an increase of almost 30,000 on 2009.
  7. Provisional data for 2010/11 show that nearly 120,000 people started an apprenticeship this first quarter, up by 20% on the previous year!
  8. Hampshire in the South East had the most people successfully complete an apprenticeship last year with a figure of 5,730.
  9. If you think apprenticeships are just for boys you are very wrong! The split on average in 2010 was 50.4% males and 49.6% females.
