RAF Mover - Spare Time Reserve

As an RAF Mover, you will be responsible for planning and executing the movement of RAF personnel and cargo by road, rail, air and sea.

WHY JOIN THE RAF RESERVES

The skills you acquire as a Reserve won’t just prepare you for the RAF, they will enhance your work and civilian life.

THE ROLE OF AN RAF MOVER

RAF Movers are responsible for the movement of troops and cargo according to RAF operational needs. You will operate IT systems, load and unload transport aircraft and accompany cargo all over the world. You could be checking-in passengers flying out on operations or operating forklift trucks and specialist vehicles to load cargo and baggage to transport aircraft. It could be your job to plan aircraft loads using IT systems, or calculate aircraft weights and balances using pen and paper with weight and balance paperwork. You could work in a port where shipments of cargo and explosives are handled, or help put together an under-slung load for a helicopter.

Within your first few years, you will probably be detached overseas for anything from a few days to a few months.

 INITIAL TRAINING

Your training will start with a Basic Recruit Training Course consisting of 4 weekends at your chosen RAF Reserves Squadron, followed by a 15-day residential training course at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. As well as military training, you will learn about the core values, code of conduct and history of the RAF, as well as its unique lifestyle.

SPECIALIST TRAINING

Your next step will be a Basic Movements Training specialist-training course at 4624 Squadron, which lasts for 10 months. This course will give you a basic understanding of your role as a RAF Mover, which includes transport procedures and regulations, aircraft loading and the handling of passengers and cargo. On graduation from this course you will be promoted to Air Specialist Class 2.
