About me :
Hi I’m Sam, a final year Chartered Management Degree Apprentice. Placed within DHL Supply Chain’s Life Sciences & Healthcare division. Whereby I am a part of the senior operational management team leading our teams in fulfilling the supply of pharmaceutical medications on behalf of our client to the UK & International markets.
Before embarking on my apprenticeship journey, I worked within Fashion Retail as a sales manager after taking a year out of education upon completing my A-levels in Business, Photography and Film.
Why an apprenticeship ?
I chose to undertake an apprenticeship as I enjoyed studying but the idea of University and the attributes that accompanied it did not appeal to me in the way it did with others. An apprenticeship allowed me to gain valuable real-life experience in a well-established and broad organisation, in an sector which always enticed me. Accompanying this with generous benefits available. To me, it was a no-brainer!
Why did DHL Apprenticeships appeal to you?
DHL appealed to me initially due to its scale and prominence in everyday life. After further research DHL’s ethics became apparent, that of being focused on its people and its digitalisation agendas fit well with my interests and wants from an employer.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
For me every day brings a new challenge. I’m kept busy and engaged in a variety of projects I lead and sustain within our operation. My job is a brand new role to site and heavily revolves around continuous improvement and project management, so my day-to-day tasks and priorities change frequently. These elements ‘spice’ up my day, making it very fulfilling and enjoyable!
What has been your highlight so far?
One highlight for me was the first ever project I lead. The project required the implementation, development and management of a wide variety of new implementations into site. These implementations ultimately assisting our management teams, colleagues and the client in managing our sites performance and excelling developmental opportunities. I thoroughly enjoyed my time leading this project, it was out of my confidence zone and provided me with real responsibility and the opportunity to further develop and network with my peers and senior management teams.
What advice would you give to people thinking of doing an apprenticeship?
I would say to people that don’t deem further education as being the traditional University route. Apprenticeships are a perfect opportunity to develop yourself personally and professionally in a wide array of industries and jobs that they may of thought might not be accessible to them due to experience etc. In a DHL apprenticeship, you are treated as an employee and pushed in your development during experiences that you may of thought you wouldn’t of receive as an apprentice. Joining one of the largest supply chain leaders internationally you not only benefit from the extensive knowledge and experience from others around, you also receive the educational benefits. To great aspects, of which when combined, allow you to excel.
