When did you join the Aspire programme and what did you study at school?

I joined the Aspire Programme in September 2019 having studied at Collingham College in London for my GCSE’s and have A’ Levels in Economics, Mathematics, Art and English Literature. I knew I wanted to get into Banking but I wasn’t sure what field I wanted to get into as I didn’t know much about it besides what I had studied. I did apply to university and managed to secure a place however as it came closer to picking my choice I decided working and studying would be a better fit for me as I would gain invaluable exposure into the Banking world at a young age.

Why did you choose the Aspire Programme?

I chose the ASPIRE programme because it offered a career potential in the Banking Industry and also the opportunity to broaden my experience of the financial environment and the different job functions. Initially what stood out to me the most was the opportunity for rotations as it gives young people who may not know which field they want to get into yet, the option to explore all parts of the bank and choose what they want to get into. The great thing about Close is the culture and this is installed throughout every single employee throughout all divisions.

What placements did you do as part of the programme and what are you doing now?

I completed my first-year rotation in Motor Finance, based in Doncaster and my second year was spent working in our Treasury Division in London. These placements gave me the opportunity to work across two completely different business areas, locations, teams and develop knew skills. Post the scheme, I secured a role as Business Development Executive in our Invoice Finance team based in Manchester.

What skills do you need to be successful?

In order to be successful, I think it’s really important to be as versatile as you can. Challenges will arise in every job you have. You’ll want to have the ability to analyse issues, make sound decisions and overcome problems. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is important. Having a strong desire and willingness to learn gets you the most out of your rotations and the Aspire programme as a whole!

Why should someone choose the Aspire Programme?

The ASPIRE Programme is a great path to go down as you get to spend time with different parts of the business and learn varied systems and processes. Within your 2 year rotation you may have experienced several different job roles which gives you a massive advantage as you work your way up the ladder.

If you have an interest in learning about Close Brothers and would like to gain the experience of working in the banking industry, working alongside great teams, colleagues and senior leaders, this programme is the right choice for you.
