What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
Currently, I work in the Fixed Assets team as part of the Finance Share Service Centre (FSSC) in Bristol. My role involves dealing with varied requests that get sent to the team mailbox (for example to raise a job number that allows those in the business to allocate costs related to an asset) but I’m also getting involved in various projects. One of the projects I’m excited to start working on will be to transform the way a process is run by implementing it into a system. Because this role is very different to my previous one, I’ve got the opportunity to learn about and experience a whole other aspect of BT which I’m really enjoying.
Most enjoyable moment/project so far?
I’ve had quite a few enjoyable moments since joining BT. One highlight of my time here was getting the chance to converse with Simon Lowth, the Chief Finance Officer, during a webcast with the whole of Group Finance & Operations that had an audience of 24,500 people! Apart from this, earlier in the year, we also had the opportunity to have lunch with him where we were able to hear about his career path and ask him questions in a relaxed setting. In addition to this, I’ve been able to get involved in raising money for various charities that BT supports and also promote the apprenticeship schemes BT offers at local schools and sixth forms.
Why did you choose the apprenticeship?
When I was at school, I knew that I wanted to work in the accountancy & finance sector but wasn’t quite sure how achieve that goal. When I found out that there were varied avenues I could take to get there, such as: go to university, study an accountancy course at college or do an apprenticeship, it was obvious to me that an apprenticeship was the best option. This is because I could reach my goal years earlier than if I’d gone to university or college. BT’s apprenticeship really stood out to me because you get to study a qualification that’s recognised globally (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, CIMA) at a global company. Combining the two means that there is a huge number of opportunities available in the Finance sector alone.
Future aspirations
Now, my main goal is to become a fully qualified CIMA accountant. After that, seeing that BT is a global organisation, I would like to experience parts of BT (called Line of Businesses) within the Finance sector in different countries. Furthermore, I’m very interested in working with and developing apprentices so I may explore that avenue in the future.
