“Being able to learn new things and develop your skills gives you a great sense of achievement”
Don’t listen to people when they say accountancy is boring – as an AAT Trainee, I learn new things every day, get an insight into clients’ businesses and how they work, and speak to a lot of different people. Boring is the last thing I’d describe it as! There’s a lot to learn – but a huge sense of satisfaction to be gained from building knowledge and skills.
I wanted to have the opportunity to put learning into practice right away so was really happy to discover that there was an apprenticeship route into the profession. I often find that I am able to answer college questions easily because I have come across the same situations in real life while working in the office. The fact that you also gain a qualification without paying for it whilst earning a salary is a huge benefit.
I chose Bishop Fleming because I was impressed by the level of support and opportunities for development that the firm offered. I have never had to worry about asking a silly question. Everyone is willing and happy to help you - I have a buddy and a mentor who have been specifically assigned to me, but I am welcome to approach other members of the team with any questions I have.
It’s great to feel that you are progressing. I joined Bishop Fleming in February and am currently working with the Business Services team, mainly preparing accounts. I have already been able to work on personal tax and corporate tax jobs as well as VAT returns. I’ve even gained a new qualification –my Xero certification. Bishop Fleming picks up on your strengths and encourages you to develop these. I plan to study for my ACA qualification once I have finished AAT.
