We spoke to Jamie to understand why he decided to change his career path from Civil Engineer to the Field Service Engineer apprenticeship scheme.
Tell us who you are and what you do
My name is Jamie Aitchison and I am an Enterprise (business to business) Field Engineer.
What did you do before you joined the Field Service apprenticeship scheme?
I was a Civil Engineer for Openreach, I felt it did help me with Engineering experience and gave an inside of how BT/Openreach function, so I am not blind when coming in, but before that I worked for McDonalds for 5 years which offered me a ground to go on with customer experience, as they can teach me how to use tools.
Do you have to have a background in engineering to apply for an apprenticeship in Field Service?
I did, due to working for Openreach as a Civil Engineer, so I have some skills in Engineering and also knowledge on how BT work. But those who don’t have the background in Engineering or BT/ Openreach will be taught how they can deliver great customer service alongside their Engineering training.
What attracted you to apply for an apprenticeship in Field Service?
I like the sound of the role and what it offers, such as going to business or customers houses and helping them get the best service, they need to function. For example, during lockdown we were needed more than ever, and it was a great feeling knowing I could be part of helping keep the country connected.
What do you love about your job?
I love that the day to day jobs are never the same, and also the excitement of helping people with their issues, and making sure we give our customers the best service they need to help their lives and business’ flow as best as they can, especially during the pandemic where it’s needed more than ever.
What are your career plans for the future?
I’ve just started out, so I am happy learning everything there is to know in my current position right now. However I am really looking forward to upskilling and trying different roles in the business. I want to help teach others what I know, and pass down knowledge I have gained, perhaps moving into a leadership role to help others and watch them grow!
