My role‘I’m based at RAF Leuchars in Scotland where I help ensure the smooth running of our ground-based machinery. We work on all kinds of things: engines, jacks, ladders. I like the fact that you’re not just pigeon-holed into doing one type of work all the time. I find that really rewarding.’My day‘On a typical day, I work on everything from heavy plant machinery and small jacks to any of the vehicles at the station. General Technician Mechanical is a really diverse trade.’My experiences‘I’ve been all over the world with the RAF. One of the most interesting trips was a three-month exercise in Alaska supporting a Tornado squadron. Our American equivalents were very friendly and invited us into their homes. They took us fishing and white-water rafting, and once we went whale-watching. I had the best 12 weeks ever. It’s certainly true what they say: when you go away with the RAF, you work hard - and play harder.’My life‘You never stop learning in the RAF and throughout my career I’ve been encouraged to gain qualifications. I have an NVQ Level 3, and a Higher National Certificate in mechanical engineering. Even after promotion to Corporal, there are still new things to learn.’
