Derby’s Liam Is Top Apprentice

A teenager from Derby has been named Apprentice of the Year for the second time in a row by his employer Barratt Homes North Midlands.

Liam Gibson, aged 18, has been working as a bricklaying apprentice for two years and is currently studying for his NVQ Level 3 at Derby College. The award comes as the company announcing its plans to take on another 90 apprentices across the Group in 2013.

Recently named one of the country’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers, Barratt has recruited some 186 trade apprentices in the last three years.

Liam once again beat off competition from fellow apprentices working on sites across the North Midlands. The award recognises his tremendous achievements.

“It’s a real privilege to have been awarded Apprentice of the Year for the second time running” said Liam, a keen Derby County FC supporter. “Barratt Homes is a great company to work for; they offer lots of support and guidance and I am able to put everything I learn at college into practice when I’m on site, which is really important.

“This apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to improve my skills and knowledge which I hope to develop even further this year.”

John Dillon, Managing Director for Barratt Homes North Midlands, comments, “Apprenticeships are essential to the homebuilding industry and it is great to see a student such as Liam who is really enthusiastic to learn and progress. Liam’s tenacity and determination to succeed prove that he is a great asset to the company.

“We are encouraging anyone considering what do to after school or indeed anyone of any age keen for a career change to take a serious look at apprenticeships. They are an excellent stepping stone into an industry and give you the chance to earn and learn at the same time.”
