TWO students on an HND Graphic Design course at Havering College have been commended in a prestigious awards scheme.

Margie Hammond and Samuel Brandner have been selected as winners in the 2011 YCN Student Awards which recognise emerging creative talent. The annual awards are open to universities, colleges and Art & Design schools across the UK, and overseas.

Havering College – which offers Graphic Design Courses ranging from a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma to HNC/HND Diplomas and BA (Honours) degree – is delighted to have two HND students among the winners.

The competition is based around a collection of live creative briefs, written by partnering brands, charities and other organisations.Margie and Samuel submitted their innovative ideas for an advertising campaign for the river travel company Thames Clipper.Their success will see their work featured in the YCN Student Annual - 10,000 copies of which are distributed across education and the creative industries. They will also be invited to an awards ceremony in London later this year.

Margie, 45, who lives in North London, said: “Winning this award now is really good timing because it confirms that I am doing the right thing having been judged by people in the industry. Hopefully it will carry a little bit of kudos when applying for jobs.”

Samuel, 34, from Redbridge, said: “I am delighted to be among the winners. I did think I had a strong idea although I realised the competition would be tough.”

The HNC/HND Graphic Design course represents new career directions for both Margie and Samuel.

Margie, who was a landscape architect, says her two hour commute to the college in Hornchurch, Essex, has definitely been worth it.

She said: “I have loved the college. It has been a fantastic experience. The tutors are amazing and the facilities are good and we have all the latest software. I would totally recommend Havering College.”

Samuel, who worked as a photographer prior to the course, said: “I have been doing photography for several years but work was getting slow and so I wanted to return to college to gain further skills. Havering College has been first class. My course is very set up to have a professional outlook and the facilities are brilliant.”

Tony Branch, Havering College curriculum manager for HE Graphic Design, said: “This is only the second year the college has entered these awards. Margie and Samuel did extremely well. Having two students named as winners in the same category is indicative of the high standards achieved on the Graphic Design courses at the college.”
