The summer holidays are nearly over, and now the main focus is getting yourself ready for school. It’s a hard transition, going from a six week holiday back to school, but you can do it! Everyone has different emotions at the start of September, but there are many things you can do to make you feel ready. See below our top 10 tips for getting back to school in September.
It probably feels like a distant memory, but if you still have your notes, have a look through your subjects/topics. You’ll remember exactly where you ended, so for the new year you’ll know what’s coming next.
If you’re starting new subjects, you can research what will be covered in the first term so you have an idea. Hopefully this mentally prepares you and when the teacher goes through the syllabus, there will be no surprise!
Double check you have all the books/resources you need for the year ahead. Some subjects might continue with the current textbooks you have, but there could be new ones to buy, depending what year you’re going into. They can be expensive, so if you are struggling financially, ask the school if you can borrow them (they always have spares).
Everyone loves new stationery, it can sometimes motivate you and make learning more enjoyable when you have new post-it notes, notebooks and highlighters! Have a look through your stationery to see if you have everything ready. You might need to buy something new, for example a protractor or compass for maths. To make it easier, why not make a list of everything you need and tick it off after you’ve added it in your school bag. That way you can’t miss anything!
Just before the summer holidays, some teachers like to set homework, therefore make sure you have finished it. There’s nothing worse than rushing to get it all done the day before the first day of school starts.
You don’t want to wear your uniform on the first day of school and realise there are holes and stains… or they don’t fit at all because you’ve grown! Try everything on and take a trip to the schoolwear shop if needed. Also, you might need to buy some new uniform if there are different requirements for the upcoming school year.
After you’ve sorted through your books and stationery, start placing them in your bag so you don’t have to worry about getting it done in the morning on your first day. Don’t forget other little things like a water bottle, lunch (if you aren’t buying at school), tissues etc. If your bag isn’t in a good condition, buy a new one to avoid all your stuff spilling out in the school hallways.
It’s important to have a good set up at home for when you have projects, revision and homework. If you’ll be working in your room, tidy things up so you have a clear working area and ensure the lighting is good. It’ll help with your concentration and productivity.
There are loads of fun ways to keep your mind active over the summer. You can read, visit museums, watch documentaries, do sudoku, crosswords or puzzle games. If you keep that part of your brain in use, going back to school will be much easier!
In between all this prep, make sure you find time to relax. The summer break isn’t over just yet, so enjoy it!!
Take your time and spread it across the six weeks so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. If you follow these tips, it should help you when you go back to school in September. We hope you have a productive, successful school year!
