As a Year 12 student, the summer holidays are a great opportunity to get ahead in preparing for apprenticeship applications in Year 13. With (degree) apprenticeships becoming increasingly competitive these days, getting ahead during this time can significantly increase your chances of
securing your dream role!
Here are some top tips on what you can do to prepare.
1. Research Apprenticeship Opportunities
Begin by exploring the types of apprenticeships available in industries you're interested in. There are so many different types of apprenticeships being offered these days, so you need to research which one interests you the most. Use the Not Going To Uni website to browse the types of apprenticeships currently available and search companies online for which you are interested in working. Create a list of potential apprenticeships, noting their application deadlines, entry requirements, and any specific skills or qualifications needed.
2. Work on your CV
A high-quality CV is essential for apprenticeship applications, as this is usually the first impression you make during the application process. Start by updating your CV with any new qualifications, predicted grades, extracurricular activities, or work experiences that you have. It is important to highlight the skills, achievements, and experiences that align with the apprenticeships you're interested in. If you don't have much work experience, focus on transferable skills gained from elsewhere, such as school projects, volunteer work, hobbies, or part-time jobs.
3. Gain Relevant Experience
Experience can set you apart from other candidates in this highly competitive process. Consider undertaking part-time work, internships, or volunteering in sectors aligned to your desired apprenticeship. This not only boosts your CV but also provides practical insights into the industry to see if it is something you actually want to pursue. If in-person opportunities are limited, you can also look for virtual experiences or online workshops.
5. Prepare for Interviews and Assessments
Many apprenticeships require passing interviews or assessment centres. Practice common interview questions and develop your answers using the STAR method. Focus on explaining why you are interested in the apprenticeship, what you can bring to the company, and examples of how you've demonstrated relevant skills. There are plenty of tips online for interviews and assessment centres that you can research.
6. Network
Networking can open doors to apprenticeship opportunities and is invaluable for gaining insight into an industry. Use platforms such as LinkedIn or even messaging Corporate TikTok influencers to connect with people in your desired role/apprenticeship and ask them any questions you want to know about.
7. Plan Your Application Timeline
Following your research and understanding of what apprenticeships you want to apply for, create a timeline for your apprenticeship applications. List key dates for applications, interviews, and deadlines, so you stay on top of it when you start getting busier in year 13. By taking these steps, you'll be well-prepared to apply for apprenticeships in Year 13. Use your summer wisely to gain experience, develop skills, and plan your applications, but remember to rest from your busy year! The majority of applications open in September time, so ensure you use these next few months wisely.
