GRADUATING students from Havering College of Further and Higher Education have showcased an amazing diversity of talent at this year’s Free Range exhibition in London’s Brick Lane.
The show at the Old Truman Brewery provides a valuable platform where emerging artists and designers from colleges and universities can gain exposure to thousands of visitors.
The work from Havering College showcased across the BA (Honours) degrees in 3D Design Craft, Fashion, Fine Art and Graphic Design. The projects were original, innovative and thought-provoking.
Graphic Design student Lucy Dodds was thrilled to get her work noticed by reviewers from Digital Arts.
The online magazine referred to the “great work of Havering College” and singled out Lucy as an example.
Lucy, 21 from Chelmsford, took her inspiration for her final project from her love of travel discovered when she took part in the BBC programme, The World's Strictest Parents.
Lucy – who has since travelled through Europe with her grandmother – said: “Travel can teach much broader things in life and my collection shows what can be gained from a personal travel experience and raises awareness of the benefits of travel beyond leisure.”
She is now hoping to work in television as a researcher.
Graphic Design student Mitchell Walker, 21, from Romford, would ideally like to work in experiential marketing but is open-minded to any opportunity to get his foot on the career ladder.
He believes Havering College has prepared him well for the competitive jobs market thanks to its close links with leading design firms.
Up-and-coming Fashion designer Sameah Zahid, 22, from Hackney, produced a collection inspired by the ancient art of origami. Her ambition is to establish herself as an independent designer.
Graduating BA Fine Art student Lisa Walker, 36, from Romford - a painter and video artist - exhibited portraits of her daughter Verity.
3D Design Craft student Mark Owers, 22, from Brentwood, displayed his furniture.
Mark’s designs involve combining the old and the new, working with versatile materials such as concrete and wood and using techniques such as digital laser etching and traditional steam bending.
His pieces attracted interest from a buyer in Korea.
Graduating from the same course is Gillian Horsman. Gillian loves Havering College so much that she has been a part-time student for 16 years progressing from GCSE to A-level, HNC, HND and finally her degree.
Gillian from Harold Wood, who specialises in ceramics, said: “Studying at Havering College has completely changed my life.”
More student artwork will be on show at the End of Year Creative Arts Show taking place at the college’s £6million Centre for Creative Arts at the Ardleigh Green Campus in Hornchurch, Essex,from June 19-22.
