Ten schools participated in the day which was refereed by student volunteers from the College. Boccia, now a Paralympic sport, is traditionally played by athletes with disabilities that have a major impact on motor skills. Played by individuals, pairs, or teams of three it is a target ball sport similar to bowls or pentaque.
Sport Diploma BTEC Level 3 student, Malachi Luke Oram volunteered on the day and is also deaf himself. He said “After doing research I eventually chose to study Sports at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London because it was the best place I found for people with disabilities to study. In the future I would like to teach deaf and disabled sports. Volunteering at the Boccia tournament today is not only great experience for me but it’s good for the students to see that having a disability doesn’t necessarily have to affect what you can achieve in sports.”
College Sportsmaker, Robert Murphy, who organised the event said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the College to showcase our new facilities to schools in the local area and what we can offer to students of all abilities. It’s also a great learning experience for our student volunteers.”
The event was such a success that an additional event is now being considered for the summer. Marion Cornam from Enfield Council said, “This event really benefits the students involved. We have a whole spectrum of impairments here today and for some of them it is their only sporting outlet. Thanks to the College for hosting this borough event again. The College’s students did a sterling job!”
