The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London’s Level 2 Hairdressing student Wanessa Carvalho walked away with the prestigious Chris and Son’s Hairdressing Competition 2015 for her outstanding hair and makeup styling in the ‘Animal Category’ last month at the Chris and Son’s Hair and Beauty Wholesale Megastore and training Academy.
Around thirty students from Colleges around London, including South Thames and City and Islington took part in the competition in the hopes of winning the ‘Chris and Sons Hairdressing Level 2 Student of the Year Competition 2015’. Four of the College’s learners participated and demonstrated exceptional creativity and flair in this year’s theme, ‘Life Forms’. Entrants were given 4 themes to choose from; animal, human, space/fantasy or plant and were asked to create a style which included hair, make up and costume for their models.
Level 2 Hairdressing student Wanessa Carvalho excelled and in the Animal Category beating stiff competition to claim first place, winning herself a Babyliss Perfect Curl donated by Babyliss. She said: “I decided on the look by doing lots of research beforehand and testing different looks on models. We had two hours on the day to get everything ready. There were students from lots of different colleges that had great looks so I was quite nervous and really proud of myself for winning! I now plan to continue on to the Level 3 in Hairdressing at the College but this has made me realise that I really want to get in the fashion industry so I’m also considering a Level 2 in makeup.”
Hair and Beauty learners at the College are given extensive experience at competitions allowing them to showcase their practical skills, gain experience with the interview process for competitions and receive valuable recommendation and feedback for the leading experts in the field. Vas Karpetas the Celebrity Stylist judging the entrants and Lee Burgess-Tolley from Babyliss Pro were at this year’s Chris and Sons competition. Competing is an invaluable opportunity for learners to build confidence, realistically assess where their skill level sits within the industry and a chance for them to work alongside learners from other colleges.
Curriculum Manager in Hair and Beauty, Maria Rees, said: “All staff and learners here at the College are extremely proud of Wanessa for achieving a winning category at this year’s Level 2 Student of the Year Competition. She has shown excellent technical ability and finishing techniques to create an overall look demonstrating the great skills and level of work our students are at.”
