Have you ever wondered what careers you could do without needing to go to University if you have a passion for sport & fitness? It’s a very popular industry, which means it is highly competitive, but there are lots of jobs within the sports & fitness sector that could be the perfect career path for you. Take a look at some of the options below.
Personal Trainer
Personal trainers are responsible for motivating and guiding clients to train towards their physical fitness goals, which could include losing weight, building muscle, increasing core strength, or improving cardiovascular fitness. Having advanced knowledge of a variety of exercise techniques and how each one works to improve the body is a great skill that you need to become a personal trainer, so if you are a gym enthusiast this could be the perfect career path for you. You will also need to have an empathetic attitude and be able to understand each client's individual goals, emotions, and needs.
Health and Wellness Coach
As a Health and Wellbeing Coach you will help people develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage their own health and wellbeing. You will use health coaching, motivational interviewing and behaviour change skills to empower people to make positive lifestyle changes. The role will take a holistic approach that helps increase people’s ability to access community support and self-management education.
Sports Massage Therapist
As a sports massage therapist, you'll provide an immediate response when sport and exercise-related injuries occur and will rehabilitate the patient back to full fitness. You'll also provide advice and support to help prevent injuries from happening in the first place. Some sports massage therapists are generalists, but there’s also an opportunity to specialise in a certain sport. Do you like football? Maybe you could work at your favourite club so you combine your love for the sport and your career!
Sports Coach
As a sports coach, you’ll be responsible for planning, organising and delivering an appropriate range of sports activities and programmes for individuals and teams. You could work at a school, university, sports club, fitness centre or at a holiday camp. It all depends on what your goals are and what you’d like to achieve in your career. For example, if you have great knowledge about field & track, you could become a coach in that specific sport.
Sports Journalist
Do you have a passion for sport, but also love writing? Then a sports journalist could be a great career for you. It's a varied role that requires excellent interpersonal skills and the flexibility to use new and emerging technologies. There are different types of sports journalists, for example you could be working on live broadcasts or focusing on writing feature articles, so make sure you do your research before starting a course. A good way to get your foot in the door is getting some work experience, an internship or an entry-level job so you have an understanding of what it’s like being a sports journalist.

Do you love watching sports, but don’t like to physically get involved? Maybe you could work for a sports company/organisation and get involved in a different area of the business? This could be in marketing, finance or even HR! For example if you’re a tennis fan, why not apply for a job at Wimbledon or the Tennis Lawn Association, alternatively see if there’s an opportunity to join your favourite football or rugby team working in their office.
If you have strong communication skills, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, creativity, adaptability and a passion for physical & mental wellbeing, then a career in sports & fitness could be the ideal pathway for your future.
