To work under the specific supervision, instruction and guidance of the class teacher to support the teaching and learning activities in the classroom with pupils who have complex needs and profound learning difficulties

Main responsibilities and tasks

  1. Attend to the pupil's personal needs and implement related personal 
    programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and 
    welfare matters.
  2. Supervise and support pupils ensuring their safety and access to 
    learning.
  3. Establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and 
    being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs.
  4. Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
  5. Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led 
    by the teacher.
  6. To prepare and maintain basic classroom resources and equipment as directed by the class teacher and assist the pupils in their use.
  7. To prepare the classroom as directed for lessons, ensuring that resources are available and cleared away at the end of the lesson as appropriate.
  8. To provide regular feedback to teachers and to other professionals on pupils’ achievement and progress.
  9. To provide feedback on pupils in relation to progress and achievement under guidance of the teacher.  This may include feedback on pupil progress in meeting individual education plan (IEP) targets.
  10. To administer and mark routine tests under the guidance of the class teacher and in line with the school’s marking policy.
  11. To be aware of the planning of work and activities.
  12. To provide general clerical support to the teacher, e.g. photocopying, laminating, filing, etc as required.
  13. To be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, SEN/inclusion and data protection reporting all concerns to the appropriate named person.
  14. To assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson time but during the school day, within contracted hours as necessary for their safety.
  15. To work in an environment where there is a varied intensity of demands from the pupils and where physical intervention may be needed to ensure the safety of the child or others.
  16. To plan, prepare and accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities within contracted hours as required
  17. To assist with the general pastoral care of pupils, including helping pupils who are unwell, distressed or unsettled and those experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties.
  18. To adhere to school health and safety policy including risk assessment and safety systems.
  19. To undertake broadly similar duties commensurate with the level of the post as required by the Headteacher

Entry requirements

GSCE at Grade 4-9/ C-A Including Maths and English or the equivalent.

Training to be provided

Apprentices will be required to attend college at least x1 day per week either at Uxbridge, Harrow or Hayes Campus completing necessary mandatory training and units associated with the apprenticeship. 

The apprentice will be required to complete:

  • Work towards gaining a full Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Behaviours.
  • Standard and End Point Assessment.
  • Functional Skills in English, Maths, and ICT (if required).

 

Other training will be provided by the employer as required to enable the fulfilment of the job role.

Things to consider

The school is looking to recruit an Apprentice Teaching Assistant to work under the direct instruction of teaching staff, to support access to learning for pupils and provide general support to the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom.
