Dawn On Life As A Field Service Apprentice
3 years ago

We joined Dawn to understand what she gets up to, on our Field Service apprenticeship scheme.

Tell us who you are and what you do

My name is Dawn Dalton and I am a Field Engineer for BT Enterprise (Business to Business function). My role involves going to various business premises to install, maintain and repair customer networks.

What did you do before you joined Field Service, and what attracted you to apply for the scheme?

Before starting with BT I worked as a cook in a local restaurant. I had been looking for a different career path for a couple of years when I found the BT application. I loved the idea of getting out and about, meeting different people every day and having the opportunity to learn and progress.

What’s it like being a woman in Engineering?

To be honest I don’t feel like being a woman has made any difference. I have been treated exactly the same as the rest of my colleagues. Customers can seem quite surprised at times but also happy to see the industry changing.

How do your peers/ managers support you?

I have had an unbelievable amount of support since starting with BT. Throughout my apprenticeship I had some great mentors who took the time to make sure I was getting the training and guidance I needed and gave recognition when I done well. I have never been worried going to a job because I know there will always be someone on the other end of the phone ready to help.

What do you love most about your job?

There are a lot of great aspects of the job. The people I work with are great, and I love going to different places and meeting different customers every day. I am proud to work for BT, they really focus on customer service, rewarding their employees and continually learning and improving on service.

What would you say to other women considering a career in Engineering?

It is an excellent and rewarding career and if it’s something that interests you then don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and go for it. I couldn’t have imagined how much I would enjoy this job and can’t recommend it enough.
