Is A Career In It Right For You?

There are so many career opportunities within the IT sector, could this industry potentially be a good path for you to go down after leaving school or college? We want you to have all the knowledge and information to make this decision, so hopefully this blog can help you figure out if a career in IT is right for you and some of the companies that are currently advertising IT opportunities on our website.

First of all, what are the different areas of IT you can work in?

  • applications development
  • computer forensics
  • content management
  • cyber security and risk management
  • data analysis and analytics
  • game development
  • geographical information systems (GIS)
  • hardware engineering
  • information management
  • IT consultancy (business and technical)
  • IT sales
  • multimedia programming
  • software engineering (designing, building, developing and testing)
  • systems/network management
  • technical support
  • telecommunications
  • web design/development

As you can see, there is a wide range of options within the IT sector and they all offer something different. Some of these areas crossover with other industries as well, so there’s an opportunity to learn and grow across multiple sectors.

The benefits of a career in IT

If you decide to do an IT apprenticeship, it can be a great way to develop your skills and learn all about the role you are interested in, all while getting paid a salary and having extra incentives by your employer (the benefits will differ depending on the company). Apprentices will also have better long-term salary prospects and excellent progression opportunities, whether that’s looking to study further or climb the ranks within the workplace.

If you think an apprenticeship isn’t for you, you could look at IT Courses. Although some of them are paid courses, it can help you get a job down the line. Maybe start with a free course, then see how you feel about doing a paid for course. Depending on your situation, you could do an online/remote course or go into a college to study. There are so many courses available, we are sure there will be one perfect for you.

Another way to start your career in IT is an entry level job. An entry-level IT job requires little to no professional experience. With these kinds of roles, you will gain most of the skills and knowledge you need on the job. Eventually, you can use what you have learned to progress in the company and they might offer you some in-house training to level up your skills.

Work experience

Work experience can be a great way to find out if you have a passion for IT, plus it will help you stand out from your competition when it comes to applying for jobs. It shows you have taken the initiative and you’re eager to learn. By the end of your work experience, you will have a clearer understanding about what you would like to do in the future. You never know, you could even become employed by that company if they like you, or they may keep you in mind if any opportunities arise in the upcoming months.
