We are asked to make so many choices at a young age. Naturally, they can feel daunting because they seem to determine our pathways. We ask ourselves: What if I realise it’s not the right fit later on? What if I regret my choices?
One common misconception about T Levels is that they limit your options. Some people assume that choosing a specialist course means committing to one specific career path. My experience couldn’t have been more different.
My sister was a part of the first cohort to do a T Level and seeing how much she enjoyed it inspired me to explore the route myself. I have always been more of a hands-on learner, and when it came to choosing next steps, I wanted a pathway that balanced classroom learning and practical experience.
My interest in technology began when I took Computer Science GCSE. I was fascinated by how technology shapes the world around us, so choosing a T Level in Digital Production, Design and Development felt like a natural next step.
Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I could have made. Not only did it confirm my passion for technology, but it also gave me access to experiences and career pathways that I might not have discovered otherwise.
Exploring Multiple Areas of Tech
One of the biggest strengths of my T Level was how broad the course was. It covered a wide range of areas, from data to cyber security to business, giving me the opportunity to explore different aspects of the industry and figure out what interested me the most.
There are so many interesting facets of technology, and the course helped me understand the variety of career options available to me. It reinforced my passion for the subject while also introducing me to new and interesting pathways.
Through my T Level, I’ve also been able to take part in insight days with organisations including PwC, Amazon and BCS. These experiences gave me exposure to different areas of the technology sector and broadened my understanding of the opportunities available.
The Highlight of my T Level – My Industry Placement
My industry placement with Lloyds Banking Group has been the highlight of my course so far.
From winning a hackathon in my first week to learning regex and developing my coding skills, as well as playing rounders with my colleagues at a team social, the experience was both exciting and intellectually stimulating.
The industry placement helped me connect the skills I was developing in the classroom to real-world projects and business challenges. I saw in real-time how technology is utilised within large organisations and how digital solutions are delivered.
I also met my mentor through my industry placement. As my line manager at Lloyds, he encouraged me to deepen my interest in coding and sparked my curiosity about chatbots and web development - areas I am now keen to explore further! It is a connection I hope to maintain for years to come.
Most importantly, my industry placement gave me a genuine insight into working life. Learning how to balance responsibilities, adapt to a professional environment, and communicate effectively was just as valuable as the technical knowledge I gained. Those skills will stay with me throughout my career, regardless of where I end up working.
Looking Ahead
As I think about my future, I feel far more informed and confident than I did when I started. I now have a much clearer understanding of the direction I would like my career to progress in. My next step is to pursue an apprenticeship and continue building my skills within the industry.
I have also become a T Level ambassador, which has allowed me to meet other students who are just as passionate about technology. I hope to help others understand the benefits of the qualification and encourage them to consider the route for themselves.
If there is one thing I would tell someone considering a T Level, it’s this: choosing a specialist course doesn’t have to mean narrowing your options. In fact, it can do the opposite. My T Level expanded my horizons. It helped me explore different areas of technology, build professional skills, gain industry experience and access opportunities I never expected.
For students weighing up their next steps, I hope that is something you consider while making your decision.
